NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative (NESTI)
NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative (NESTI)
The NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative (NESTI) is a national program focused on the development, commercialisation, and sustainability of advanced energy storage technologies.
Key Focus Areas
Core Component Development: Enhancing electrodes, electrolytes, and structural designs to improve performance and efficiency.
New Battery Chemistries: Exploring alternative raw materials and nanomaterials for sustainable, cost-effective solutions.
Recycling & Urban Mining: Promoting a circular economy through innovative battery recycling and material recovery techniques.
Commercialisation Hub: A one-stop centre supporting technology transfer from research to market deployment.
Who is involved in the NESTI programme?
NESTI will adopt the Quintuple Helix model to ensure broad collaboration across key sectors, including:
Government agencies (e.g., NanoMalaysia, National Nanotechnology Centre, MGTC, MARii)
The HEBATT Centre, under NanoMalaysia’s NESTI program, focuses on the development and commercialisation of graphene-based composite batteries, particularly high-capacity, fast-charging lithium-ion pouch cells.
Key Highlights:
Specialises in lightweight pouch cell batteries with high power and energy density.
Supports local battery production for electric vehicles (EVs) and stationary power generation.
Reduces reliance on imports and aligns with the National Green Economy agenda.
Drives industry growth, job creation, and the adoption of sustainable energy practices.

Aluminium Pouch Cell Battery Project
The HEBATT Centre, under NanoMalaysia’s NESTI program, is advancing energy storage with its innovative Aluminium Ion Battery (AIB) project — a sustainable alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology.
Project Focus:
Electrolytes: Develop and scale up optimal ionic liquid-based formulations
Electrodes: Innovate graphene-based cathodes for enhanced performance and cycle life
Fabrication: Produce AIB pouch cells targeting 1.8V, 0.1Ah, with low resistance and long lifespan
Key Features:
Utilises water-based binders for eco-friendly production
Enhances battery safety protocols for AIB systems
Supports local production and cost-effective scaling of components

HEBATT
HEBATT (Hydrogen – Electric Vehicle – Battery) Centre was launched by YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Adham bin Baba, former Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation in 2021
Primary Focus:
Create and nurture a local ecosystem for battery production and local expertise to drive the National Green Economy agenda.
As a Centre of Excellence for local battery research and fabrication.
Research into production of graphene-based composite lithium-ion battery that will have ultra-large capacity and quick charge and discharge capacity.
Produce pouch cell battery as an alternative to cylindrical batteries, which is lighter and can store high power and energy density
